I love the five star notebooks - the pages can tear out cleanly, have pre-punched holes if you need to file them, pockets for returned assignments and/or a class syllabus, and a sturdy enough cover that a coffee spill does very little damage to the pages. Yes, I am a nerd for school supplies and yes, the Mead Five Star Notebook made me this way.

I thought I'd save some time and money buying a notebook online instead of heading to the campus bookstore. Bad idea. Without being able to see the product before purchase, I had no way of knowing how cheap it was.
The pages are not perforated, but sometimes they rip out easily because the edge is cut too close to the spiral binding. The binding also works its way out of the pages because there is nothing at the ends to keep it in place. The notebook is also floppy, so it needs to be resting on a flat surface in order to turn the pages.
Next time I need a notebook, I'm spending more money, and examining it in person first.

I have to have this exact notebook for school. It is big enough for me to glue standard paper into. Easy to tear out. Only problem is it takes up a lot of room in my binder. You can get it less expensive too.

Recycled Wirebound Notebook Review

Recycled Wirebound Notebook

I have purchased dozens of different sorts of journals and notebooks over the years as a writer. This is far and away my favorite (in vertical).
The PCW content makes the paper soft and pliable. The WireLock on the binding keeps the book together (doesn't unravel) and the cover is plain enough to make it inocuous but also something you can give your own flair to. The 9 1/2 x 6 makes it just big enough for collaging as well... you can fit photos in it as needed.
It is just the right size for me in terms of notes (fits in a medium-sized purse) and doesn't have the pesky perforated pages, which tempt you to tear sheets out. If you want to rip something out, you have to really want it! 80 pages is enough to give you substantive space, but not too much to make it bulky.
Sold a stack of these at a garage sale (blank) and regretted it ever since.

Mead Cambridge Subject Wirebound Business Notebook, Legal Rule, Letter, White, 80-Sheets (06074) Review

I don't go anywhere without a small notebook. That used to be the choice of hipsters everywhere: the Moleskine. However, the small Moleskine's were too small for me to write much more than a few words on each line and the larger ones were too big for me to be willing to drag around all day.
These 5x8 Mead notebooks have since become my notebook of choice. I go through about 2-3 a month using a variety of pens and they never disappoint. No bleeding problems (even with my fountain pens) and it also doesn't take minutes for the ink to dry. The heavy, smooth paper is a joy to write on.
Plus, they're cheap.

Looking at the images and description of this product, it seems well made, but it is not. Actually, I cannot remember seeing such a poorly made product in a long time!
The legs on the bottom look like bare metal, but mine came with silver paint. When attaching them to the base using the four wing nuts, I noticed they had very large slots instead of holes. This way the manufacturing tolerances could be so wide and still allow you to put it together. The pieces in the rear, used for cable management and for attaching a hub, barely fit and are almost falling off!
To me Rolodex now means junk!

National Brand Computation Notebook, 4 X 4 Quad, Brown, Green Paper, 11.75 x 9.25 Inches, 75 Sheets (43648) Review

The manufacturer's description of the notebook is accurate. In addition, the cover protects the interior quite nicely and the paper weight is heavy. A cloth spine binds the notebook together and appears to be fairly tough.
I purchased two of these notebooks initially to test their usefulness as a note taking medium at the Naval Test Pilot School. After one week of class and homework, I have used the first 50 pages. The paper is truly a joy to write on. The quad rule lines are perfect for writing notes, drawing graphs and charts, and using equations. I have found that my handwriting has improved noticeably as I try to use not only the horizontal lines but the vertical lines to aid letter and word spacing.
The cloth spine binds the pages closely together, making the last inch of the left page unusable in the first 30 pages. Since the right side of the notebook has more pages and is heavier, it tended to lay flat while the left pages curved away from the table to meet the binding. This problem may be visualized by trying to read the beginning of a large paperback book that is laying with the right side flat on a surface. I was able to compensate for this issue somewhat by creasing the left page as close to the spine as possible, but still wound up with the last inch of the paper without a solid surface under it. This problem will likely diminish as I near the center of the notebook and then switch to the right side as I get near the end.
Despite the issue with the unusable space, I really enjoy using these notebooks. After seeing how fast I am going through my first one I purchased 4 more, and intend to keep using them throughout my year at the school.

Mead Black Marble Wide-Ruled Composition Book (09910) Review

Mead Black Marble Wide-Ruled Composition Book (09910)
Average Reviews:

The "original" old Mead Composition Book is a classic. But recently Mead changed the Composition Book so that it's now worthless. The paper seems like it isn't 100% pure quality tree paper so it's not as smooth to write on, the cover is a messy "plastic-type" cardboard, the black tape comes off in 3 months. I hate these things now.
I bought 50 of these "new type" Mead Composition Books and the 10 new ones that I still have left, have rotted and the black tape has warped and come off. The 40 that I used up with writing, have also rotted and the black tape has come off. It's a real mess if you store them in old bookshelves. Some are made in India or Brazil and none are no longer made in the USA. The USA ones were the absolute best, with real tree paper, not "plastic-wax type" mesh waste paper, and real tree cardboard covers.
If you need fairly adequate paper to write on, get Japanese Stationery (ex: Apica Notebooks), Rhodia, Rediform DaVinci Notebooks, Leuchtturm Notebooks, Black n' Red Notebooks, or Clairefontaine, they're very good and of high quality. The paper is of a high standard.
Also, Moleskine Cahier Large Ruled Notebook (set of 3) and Writersblok Medium Ruled Notebook (set of 3), are good substitutes, of higher quality, for the Mead Black Composition Book if you're a writer like I am. It costs more but if you're a writer who needs decent paper to write on, it's well worth it.
If you're just using the Mead Black Composition Book for school notes, doodling or odd ends, it's at least useable with a good pen.
The "original" old Mead Composition Book didn't need to be changed. Bring it back.
