Hanover Computer Armoire Review

After buying several "self-assemble" pieces of shoddy furniture in the past, I decided to upgrade a bit and drop more cash than I normally would. This turned out to have somewhat mixed intermediate results, with the final result being mostly good.
The furniture itself is very attractive and falls squarely in between expensive "real" furniture and cheap pressboard furniture. It's quite sturdy feeling for the most part, but that also makes it heavy. You WILL need two people to carry and assemble this.
In fact, assembly was difficult enough that I had to split it across two days just to keep sane. The instructions are sometimes vague and in more than one place, simply wrong. Read them carefully and you'll spot the wrong places (incorrect part letter references, mostly). Most of the parts were well constructed but building even the small boxes and drawers tested my patience and my meager skills. One drawer rail was placed too high so I had to move it myself. Not too difficult, but nerve wracking.
Upon delivery I noticed cosmetic shipping damage to two pieces. I called the 800 number (which was answered quickly/politely by an English speaking person) and was directed to use a web-form to order replacement parts. The form was easy to use and the replacement parts arrived "rush" in just a couple of days without any charge to me.
Having used the cabinet steady for nearly two weeks I can say that overall I like it. There isn't any real writing space and I would've liked more drawers, but the boxes at the top can easily be taken out/moved to make room for books, speakers, etc. The keyboard drawer has held up to my heavy-handedness and is wide enough to fit a keyboard with a numeric keypad, a mouse w/mouse pad and still has some room leftover.
The overall dimensions are exactly as anticipated (not too big/small), but keep in mind that the doors need room to swing out (aprx. 12") on both sides and then they tuck nicely against the unit. Also keep in mind that there isn't any place to stash a chair when the unit is closed, so plan for that necessity.
PROS:
+ Attractive
+ Solid materials
+ Great customer service
CONS:
- Assembly required
- Sketchy instructions
- A little pricey
I was looking for something to hold my computer stuff without turning a family room into an obvious office space and this did the trick nicely. It's a little pricey but a nice compromise if you can't afford handmade furniture.
