(More customer reviews)There has long been a real need for a high-quality scientific calculator for serious scientific and engineering professional, so I was glad to see HP back in the market with the HP-33S, a replacement for their popular HP-32SII (of which I own three!). With some caveats (see below), I've found this to be a very good scientific calculator, and probably the best one being manufactured today. I guess HP finally noticed that people are willing to pay over $300 for a used HP-32SII, and took the hint.
First, some general comments. I judged the overall quality of the calculator to be quite good. The keys have a good solid feel, like traditional HP calculators. It has about 80 times the memory of the HP-32SII, and I found it to run about 2.5 times faster. The manual is excellent -- clear and very well written, and similar to the HP-32SII manual.
The HP-33S has a few new features that weren't on the HP-32SII:
- Both RPN and algebraic entry modes. (The default is RPN.) I use RPN exclusively myself.
- Several new functions: cube, cube root, integer divide, remainder, greatest integer, and signum.
- A menu with 40 built-in physical constants (speed of light, electron charge, etc.). This is a great feature; I was constantly having to look up physical constants and store them in registers; now the constants are built in.
- A feature to shift the exponent of a number in engineering mode by factors of 1000.
- Four-way cursor keys (as you would find on a PDA or graphing calculator).
- Two-line display (to show both the X and Y registers).
The HP-33S does have a couple of drawbacks:
- Most importantly, as others have noted, the decimal point (and comma) are WAY too small. The decimal point can be difficult to see, especially when it comes after a digit 2.
- The rather bizarre V-shaped keyboard is a bit strange, but not really a problem. It just tends to give the keyboard a bit of a cluttered look. I'd rather see a traditional HP rectangular layout with blue and gold function keys on a dark background.
If you are a science or engineering professional or serious student, I would recommend this calculator as the best one being made today. Hopefully HP will come out with an HP-33SII that corrects the design problems -- then they'll have a five-star calculator.

HP Officejet 6000 Color Inkjet Printer (CB051A#B1H) Review

(More customer reviews)I am a very short time user of this printer, however, this is at least 16th printer I have had at since my first Centronics in 1979, and I have installed many more at work.
The printer is very well packed. The print head comes un-installed. I had a little apprehension putting in the print head. The gray bar that is raised has a stiff spring. It would not be the first time I have pulled something too hard, but there are no locks or catches. It just lifts up. The head went in smooth as did ink installation. The next step is to put power on and wait for the printer to align. This takes some time. The printer werrs, pops, grinds, sounds like it is trying to load paper, but eventually prints, JUST WAIT.
After plugging in the Ethernet cable, the network light came on, and pressing the light got me a network printout. (However, it was not necessary). From here you put the disk in the computer and follow instructions. I installed the printer on three computers, a desktop wired to network, and Asus EEEpc, wireless (copy all files to a usb and run setup from the usb), and a laptop also wireless. The desktop with Vista required me to except port 427, the Asus running XP required nothing, and the Laptop running Vista and Zone Alarm required reconfiguring Zone Alarm. The good thing is the firewall changes required were somewhat explained by the software. The Zone Alarm instructions were better than the Windows FireAlarm instructions.
I have read many of the 'professional' reviews on this printer. Now that I have it installed and have printed several test prints, some thoughts. Print speed, is well within acceptable limits. In fact I read one review that said it was too slow. I disagree with that. I also read that the 'Photo' quality was not good. Well it is certainly good enough. It does make noise, however, it is no worse that most other HP ink jets I have dealt with. It is not a factor for me, but it it were I would pick the Wireless model and stick the thing in a closet somewhere.
I would highly recommend this printer to anyone looking for no frills printing. I particularly like the cost of ink! While I have refilled carts before, at $9.99 for color carts, for 300 pages and $14.99 for 700 pages, I don't think I will mess with it. The black XL cart is suppose to print 1,200 pages that is almost 5 reams of paper!

HP Deskjet 3050 All-in-One Printer (CH376A#B1H) Review

(More customer reviews)I needed to replace an old HP deskjet that I've had for more than 5 years that finally decided to stop working properly. I did a lot of research online and quickly got very caught up with all of these massive all-in-one devices that had way more functionality than I would ever need. If you are like me and just need a home printer to print the occasional directions/maps, recipes, coupons, bills, etc., then this is definitely the printer for you.
Before you buy a printer online you need to go to a store and see just how large these all-in-one devices actually are. My wife took one look at them and told me there is no way that is going in our home office even if it also served as a micro fridge and coffee maker. The great thing about this HP 3050 is that it has a much smaller footprint than most all-in-one printers. It has print, copy, and scan functionality, but no fax. Who needs a fax these days anyways when you can just scan a file and then email the scanned document. Most devices don't have a fax out capability anyways so unless you are operating a business out of your house and you receive a lot of faxes the lack of fax on this model should not be a problem.
The printer is not too heavy and it's packaged really well in the box. Instead of being wrapped in styrofoam it is secured with recycled cardboard and wrapped in a reusable canvas bag that you can use for your groceries. It comes with a quick installation guide, as most HP printers do, and the set up went very smoothly with no problems. There is one piece of cardboard wedged inside near the ink cartridges that I missed, but the printer told me of my error and it was easy enough to remove.
Setting up wireless was also not a problem, but you will need to be familiar with your wireless network security settings in order to get the printer connected. An alternative is just using the USB cable, which is nicely included in the box. I haven't played around with web printing yet, but it's not hard to just plug the USB cable into my desktop or laptop and print what I need.
The only negative I can think of is that the printing is a bit loud, but unless you're keeping the printer in the room with the baby crib the noise isn't THAT loud that it would be a dealbreaker. Ink consumption so far is not noticeably different than my prior HP, but I don't print all that much all that often so this is tough to measure for me.
Overall a high quality printer with all the functionality non business users would need with a smaller footprint and lower price tag than most other all-in-one printers.

This laser printer is the best value for its performance and output. I had a LaserJet 6P which is a dinosaur now, still works perfect but doesn't understand PostScript3. I got tired of printing Japanese text by first having to make a pdf and then print. Now I can print directly to the printer. The text is near perfect on a scale of 1-5, i'd say 4.5. Unless you are going to buy a $600 Ricoh, you should really consider this printer solely based on its speed and text output. Even compared to other $300 models, this printer can hold its own and may even be better in some cases. It is kind of noisy when it prints- a deep whirring noise - it's bearable but should be mentioned. The manual feed can only hold a thin amount which could be a problem for some people who are going to be printing onto a lot of envelopes. And unfortunately you can't load envelopes into the main compartment. Also the actual printing of envelopes can be annoying, you have to press the button on the printer before it prints any envelopes and you have to do it for each single one - there might be a way around this but I haven't figured it out yet.
The USB issue:
yes, HP tech support can be frustrating as with any company. But my experience wasn't as horrible as others here have had. I received two follow up phone calls, even one from an HP technical engineer about this usb issue::
through trial & error, here is what I did to make it work:
If you are having problems connecting the USB printer to your computer, i.e. WinXP won't recognize the printer, you need to disable the USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller. For some reason, on some computers running WinXP, the USB printer port is recognized as an "Unknown Device." It affects any USB port, doesn't matter if it's USB 2.0 w/Firewire or an older port. It can be fixed easily with a little tweak. I'm sure a lot of people have returned the printer b/c they thought they couldn't print or it was incompatible. Not everything works perfectly straight out of the box, what fun would that be?...
You may also have the same problem if you plan to connect the printer to a router or print server. I have a wireless Linksys Print Server and it does not recognize the USB printer. I have asked Linksys to update their Firmware. When it will happen? who knows.
Keep in mind this is a brand new model for HP and issues will arise they may not have the needed tech support yet. Notwithstanding, for this price and excellent output, I think it's worth it.

(More customer reviews)Well i must start by saying i didnt get my printer from Amazon for 40 dlls, i was about to do it when i notice they didnt talk about the ink so i wanted to know if it came with ink (which usually all do), i went to the HP website and YES all of them come with ink but then i noticed...it was 10 dlls cheaper!!! so i went ahead and bought it directly form HP. It works great for the money, its light and the design is nice.
Only thing is that the drivers take forever to install but until now thats my only complaint and IT DOESNT COME WITH A USB CABLE so u need to buy one.
I would NOT recommend it if you have to print a lot of documents, this is just a casual printer for low use i would say but the printing quality is very good.

(More customer reviews)I love this printer, I bought it on sale over the weekend for under $100 (couldn't resist a laser printer at that price!). I probably printed about 700 pages this weekend, one of the perks of being a Grad student I suppose.
The Positives
-Prints quickly and great font quality
-The printer is SMALL, smaller than my injet.
-Works great with XP and Vista (sorry, No Mac to test on)
The Con
-This printer won't work with my wireless print server. The reason given is that the driver doesn't support it at this time. My workaround for the time being is to share the printer from the desktop in my office since I do most of my printing from my laptop in another room.
Hopefully that driver or a firmware upgrade to the print server (whichever comes first) comes out soon! Otherwise this is an incredible laser printer for the price!
On a side note, many people in discussion forums have complained about the high cost per sheet for a laser printer (about 4 cents a page), it is still far lower than any inkjet AND the printer just came out, as far as I've seen, Laser cartridges (at least here on Amazon) tend to fall in price by a few dollars after the product has been out for 6 or more months. I don't see this changing for this printer as well.

HP Deskjet 6940 Color Printer (C8970A#B1H) Review

(More customer reviews)I have used this for about 6 months with no problems. I have used it with both windows and mac computers. I use it mostly for print but color photos and graphics come out well. It is easy to set up and use.
I have never had a paper jam.
Contrary to a previous reviewer, there ARE large print cartridges available that last very well.
The printer is fast and prints very nicely at the fast (low ink usage) settings.
I like the paper tray as it holds allot of paper, is easy to use, and is covered.
It is a good, fast and simple unit but I do wish it did two-sided printing.
It looks good and works quietly and reliably.
Edit 2010: This printer lasted 3 years of light use (mostly black only prints) and then the color cartridge stopped working. Cleaning and new cartridges did not solve the problem. The printer would not work at all with a color cartridge in the machine but continued to work as a black only printer if the cartridge was removed. Still, 3 years is about the most I've ever gotten out of a inkjet printer. I prefer toner machines now as they seem to last longer.
